A Sonnet for Vesak – By Chathuri Wickramaratne

A Sonnet for Vesak

Over twenty six centuries ago

On this day when the moon’s bright full face glowed

Lord Buddha shared teachings we could follow

To end suffering all existence loathed.

Today in my white dress and ribbon bow

Colorful lanterns and flowers in hand

I walk to temple beneath the moon’s glow

To celebrate Buddha who changed all land.

His birth, His death, and Enlightenment too

Depicted on banners adorned all night

Crowds of people swarming to say “Sadhu”

To appreciate Lord Buddha’s great light.

Practice loving kindness and compassion

Such is my Vesak day resolution.
